The journey to better web governance: A case study

How do you get 1700 staff members who manage 900 websites on the same page when it comes to web strategy and standards compliance? When we, the Digital Communications team at McGill University, asked ourselves this question, the obvious answer was improved web governance. But the journey to effective web governance at a large, decentralized institution isn't an easy one. Hear about our experiences and lessons learned.

Joyce has been creating websites and digital content for more than 20 years. She currently works at McGill University as Manager, Digital Communications and has also held positions on development and communications teams at the University of Victoria, Western University and Kings University College.

An award-winning speaker, Joyce has presented at conferences across North America, including DrupalCon, Confoo, HighEdWeb and #PSEWEB about web standards, governance and user experience.

Karl Jarosiewicz

McGill University

Karl Jarosiewicz is McGill IT’s Portfolio Manager, Web Publishing Services. He manages the Web Services Group, part of IT Communications, who support McGill’s Drupal-based Web Management System (WMS), a platform that currently contains 1,000+ websites, including the McGill homepage. In 1998, he started McGill’s first official website, and launched its first CMS in 2001. He's been involved in web publishing from a technical as well as a strategic point of view since those early days.
